Justice 250: Inspiring the Next Generation Through Conversations on Law, Liberty—and the People Behind Justice
As the nation approaches the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, a powerful civic learning initiative is taking shape across Illinois.
Justice250: Conversations on Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness is a statewide civic-education effort in Illinois connecting students with judges through meaningful community conversations about the rule of law, the courts, and the democratic ideals that define our country.
At its heart, Justice250 is about more than understanding the judicial system—it’s about understanding the people behind it. By bringing the principles of our founding documents into real, human dialogue, the initiative helps students develop meaningful knowledge of our judiciary system—and the individuals who uphold it every day.
A Mission Rooted in Civic Engagement
Justice250 was created to engage students as civic leaders by fostering direct conversations with Illinois judges. These discussions illuminate the structure of our courts, the responsibilities of those who serve within them, and the enduring principles that sustain our democracy.
But just as importantly, they reveal the human side of the judiciary. Students are not only learning how the system works—they are learning who makes it work. By connecting with judges as people—with experiences, values, and perspectives—students gain a more complete and meaningful understanding of justice in action.
As part of America’s 250th anniversary, the initiative seeks to strengthen public understanding, trust, and civic participation in the judicial system—while inspiring a new generation to uphold the ideals of liberty, fairness, and civic responsibility.
A Statewide Effort, Powered by Partnership
Justice 250’s impact is made possible through collaboration with key partners who bring expertise from across education, law, and civic engagement:
- Illinois Democracy Schools (IDS) – supporting student recruitment, classroom resources, and facilitation training
- American Bar Association Division for Public Education – providing feedback on instructional materials, national alignment, and outreach
- Constitutional Democracy Project at IIT Chicago-Kent College of Law – advising on student-facing resources and host site
- Illinois Judges Association – recruiting and preparing judges for meaningful student engagement
Together, these partners ensure that Justice250 is both locally meaningful and nationally relevant.
Real Conversations. Real Impact.
Across rural, urban, and suburban communities, students have participated in panel discussions with judges who shared their experiences, responsibilities, and perspectives from the bench.
Already, two Justice250 events have taken place—one in Chicago and another in the Metro East region—demonstrating the program’s ability to resonate across diverse geographic areas and student populations throughout Illinois.
What happens after these conversations is just as important as the conversations themselves.
Student reflections reveal a clear shift in understanding—moving from surface-level perceptions to a deeper appreciation of both the complexity of the justice system and the humanity of the people who sustain it.
What Students Are Learning
Several powerful themes emerged from student reflections:
Justice Requires Careful, Neutral Decision-Making: Students recognized that judges must carefully review evidence and set aside personal opinions to ensure fairness.
“There’s a lot more they have to do… like reading everything in the case and not letting personal thoughts into their decisions.”
Judges Are Human—and That Matters: Students were struck by how relatable judges are, and how that humanity strengthens the system itself.
“They are just like us… which is why they’re able to make those choices because they can understand us.”
The Work Is Demanding—Mentally and Emotionally: Students gained a new respect for the weight of judicial responsibility.
“Their jobs are not easy and not only does it take mental strength, but also emotional strength.”
Courts Play a Vital Role in Everyday Life: Students came to understand that courts are not distant institutions—they are shaped by people and directly impact individuals and communities.
“They protect individuals’ rights based on the law and Constitution.”
“State courts are the true ‘workhorses’… they decide the vast majority of cases.”
The System Strives for Fairness: Students acknowledged both the complexity and the intention behind the system.
“It’s a complicated, but overall super positive system where everyone gets a fair chance.”
Building the Future of Civic Leadership
Justice250 is not just about learning—it’s about transformation.
Students are asking more thoughtful questions. They are recognizing the responsibilities that come with citizenship. And they are beginning to see themselves as active participants in our democracy.
Crucially, they are developing meaningful knowledge of the judiciary system by connecting it to the people behind it—seeing judges not as distant authorities, but as thoughtful individuals making careful, consequential decisions.
These conversations are helping to build informed, engaged citizens who understand the importance of the rule of law and their role in sustaining it.
Looking Ahead
Justice250 is more than a commemoration—it is an investment in the future of civic life.
By connecting students with members of the judiciary, the initiative strengthens public trust, deepens understanding, and reinforces a vital truth: our justice system is only as strong as the people who serve within it—and the people who understand it.
As we reflect on 250 years since the founding of our nation, Justice250 reminds us that the ideals of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness endure only when each generation takes ownership of them.
